Neem Oil

NEEM OIL

The INCI name of a pure Neem oil is Melia azadirachta seed oil, but after the saponification* process the INCI name changes to Sodium Neemate.

Neem Oil is a vegetable oil pressed from the fruits and seeds of the Neem tree native to South Asia. The oil is highly moisturising and contains many properties that are beneficial to the skin such as vitamin E and antioxidants. Therefore it is often used to treat skin diseases such as eczema and acne.

The brownish colour and a distinctive nutty/musky smell of the oil is not everyone’s cup of tea. The strong smell of the oil may affect the final appearance and aroma of the soap if it is used in larger quantities. It is possible, however, to overcome this issue by using light coloured oils alongside the neem oil. The scent could be masked by using strong scented essential or fragrance oils (such as Tea Tree, Peppermint or Rosemary).

The maximum recommended usage in Cold Process recipe is 5% and the shelf life is approximately 2 years.
